The Shelter in Iraq

We were recently asked for help by a local animal welfare group in Iraq that were in the process of setting up Iraq’s first ever animal shelter. Opening a shelter is something that War Paws definitely wanted to do but we could not do it alone so we have now partnered with Animals of Kurdistan to build and maintain the shelter.

Dai and Louise have both witnessed first hand the plight of the animals in Iraq and it is truly heartbreaking. We have received pictures from the shelter and to say it is very basic is an understatement, it is not even half built yet but there are over 80 dogs already in residence and we desperately need your help to make it work.

Over time we are aiming to have the entire site concreted, build proper brick kennels, fit out an onsite vet clinic, build a quarantine section, build a small basic kitchen and provide accommodation so that we can have staff on site every day.

Right now the shelter is being run by Dina and Ashti but they both have day jobs as well as volunteering every spare minute for the shelter. There are 3 full time staff employed to clean and take care of the animals and there is a local vet to assist with the sick animals.

As they say, Rome was not built in a day and with projects such as this ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ and this project is our child and we need you to be our village!

We have set up a wish List on Amazon so that our supporters can purchase the items the shelter needs, of course the items do not have to be purchased from Amazon if you are able to get them cheaper elsewhere! The list can be viewed here

As well as the items on the Wish List we also need to raise the funds to be able to build the shelter to a good standard. Every penny donated gets us one step closer to being able to do this and we have set up a specific fund for the shelter and any funds received into the fund will be used only for the shelter build and running costs.
